Everyone hits that point where it gets really hard and you feel like you are doing everything right but still aren’t losing weight. Without a proper foundation, nutrition, and lifestyle changes your pouch can stretch.
If you think you lose weight fast after weight loss surgery, it can be even faster to gain weight after stretching your pouch. In light of this common problem, this 10-day pouch reset diet was created by Mexico Bariatric Center, to reset your diet and start losing weight again.

What is the Pouch Reset Diet?
The pouch reset diet is almost identical to the post-op diet after bariatric surgery, although each “phase” is shorter. Before starting the Pouch Reset Diet, you need to understand what it is.
The gastric bypass and gastric sleeve post-op diets are similar for our patients. They involve 4 phases that last around 1 week per phase. The 4-week post-op diet is ultimately compacted to create this 5 to 10-day pouch reset diet.
The point of the pouch reset diet is to restrict the amount of food and types of food that you eat. Our nutritionist created this 10-day pouch reset diet to get back in the mindset of healthy living while resetting your stomach to its appropriate size.
- This will not shrink your stomach long-term (no “reset” diets do)
- Meant to be a quick detox style diet to get you back on track with your weight loss
- No caffeine
- Must drink 64+ ounces water or sugar-free beverage
- Must not drink 30 minutes before a meal or 30 minutes after
- Do not skip any meals or shakes listed
- No additional snacks other than what is listed
- Protein shakes must have 15 grams or more of protein and less than 5g sugar
Day 1: Clear Liquids
- Water
- Tea
- Broth (chicken, vegetable, beef)
- Sugar-free drinks (crystal light, propel, vitamin zero water, Powerade zero, Mio, etc.)
- Unsweetened tea
Day 2 and 3: Thick Liquids
- Must drink 3 protein shakes and as many servings of this vegetable soup as you want, spaced out every 2-3 hours
- Weight Loss Vegetable Soup
- 64 ounces water or a sugar-free beverage
Day 4 and 5: Soft Solids
- 3 Protein shakes
- Unlimited Vegetable soup (link above)
- Choose 2 servings out of these soft solid protein options:
- ½ cup cottage cheese
- 6 ounces Greek yogurt: plain or flavored Dannon Oikos Triple Zero
- ½ cup beans (whole or refried)
- 2 scrambled or poached eggs
- 4 ounces tofu
Day 6-10: Long-Term Diet
- 3 protein shakes
- Can substitute these options for 2 out of the 3 protein shakes:
- 20 almonds
- 1 greek yogurt and up to ¼ cup berries
- 1 cheese stick and 5 whole grain crackers
- 2 eggs (scrambled, poached, or hard boiled)
- 2 meals consisting of 4 ounces lean protein (chicken, fish, turkey, pork loin, shellfish, tofu, or beans) 1 Tablespoon olive oil, 2 ounces vegetables

Results of the Pouch Reset Diet
The pouch reset diet takes hard work and dedication. In order to get long-term results from it, you need to think of it as a fresh start to your journey. im going to start Monday , I have been craving sweet and I tell my self no I do not want to gain weight , I remember like it was yesterday how I fought to loose weight . I gain 5lbs and when its the time of the month I gain weight from liquid . I cut down on crystal light and drink water .

What if you get sick on protein shakes? I had my gastric bypass 16yrs ago and have just now started to put my weight back on. I worked to hard to have it all fall apart.
You do not need to have protein shakes to be successful. You can get your protein needs from many other sources such as cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, or lean meats.
On day 4 and 5 it lists string cheese, is that 1 stick for the entire day?
Can I put fruit in the protein shake
I’ve completely messed up. I’ve been at a standstill for a while haven’t gotten under 200 and having some very horrible family tragedy has made me gain back. I have reverted to my emotional eating. I plan on starting tomorrow. Spending all day on preparing myself and my kitchen . Of those who have reset did it work for you? Help with craving etc.
Lucy, I have the same problem. I lost my son feb 18th last year. 36 years old and he had a massive heart attack. I have been emotional eating for six months not dealing with the loss very well. So I just eat what taste good to me. I need to do the reset diet and get back on track. I know my son would be o proud of me if I did. So I have decided to do it next Monday.
Can I reset with only a month post op?!
A string cheese or 1 ounce of any cheese would count as one of your 2 protein servings a day. Calorie wise it is about the same as the other options, although the serving is smaller. It is not the most filling option, so I would go with a different protein option if you are feeling hungry that day.

Thinking of starting the re-set tomorrow. How did you all do on it? Had sleeve surgery 3 years ago and lost 180 pounds. After hip replacement 6 months ago, started to gain back weight I’m very frustrated and upset and having a hard time getting back on track.
Question, I am on day 3 and finding it super hard to get in all my water because I dont down the protein shakes really fast. Does the 30 minutes before and after count with shakes as well or just solid food?
Hi Bridget, you do not have to wait 30 minutes between protein shakes or any other liquids. This rule only applies for solid foods.

October 21, 2018 will be my 2 year surgiversary. I have not gotten down to my goal and I’ve been inching up, 10 pounds. Everything is tight and I am miserable.
I have spinal issues and I cannot walk. In addition, I’ve been getting steroid injections. I know this has a lot to do with the weight gain, but this is my life and I have to figure out how to live with it.
I am doing the pouch test tomorrow and I will start the 10 day reset on Tuesday.

I did it and it didn’t affect my weight loss. I lost 14lbs while on the diet.
I am starting tomorrow. On day 10 I am having a hysterectomy. I was told to up my protein and iron. I had my sleeve 3 years ago. I was down 75 lbs. I gained 40 back and want it off. I had two foot injuries that triggered my emotional eating. I need to get myself back on track. What were your numbers after the reset. I will be happy with 10 or 15 lbs. if that is possible.
Would like to start this process on Monday and prep on Sunday. For those who have completed the full 10 days and had the gastic sleeve have you noticed a difference? I know everyone is different with weight loss but how much did you lose? I gained 30 lbs due to being put on Lupron injections and not eating right(bad combination) so I would like to lose at least 15 by my 40th birthday in October :)

I lost 11 lbs. after 10 days. If you can get past the first day you will be fine. After that I wasn’t hungry because I had the soup. Sometimes I couldn’t even get in the two meals of lean meat and vegetables. IT WORKS!!

I have a quick question. I had my gastric sleeve done in June 2018 I have 20lbs left to lose. I am training for a half marathon in May…… is this sufficient meal intake for the intense training I started a few weeks ago ? Hi Kat, you should adjust your calories to fit your activity level. You will need to increase your protein intake to maintain your muscle mass, as well as your carbohydrate intake to fuel your body.
Plan to start this on Monday! Had surgery 5 yrs ago but have gone up 25 lbs want to get back in control. I’m not sure if I am understanding days 6-10…you have 3 shakes or 1 shake and protein substitutes listed and 2 meals of 4oz meat and 2oz of vegetables daily? Or are shakes substituted by meal or protein ie nuts yogurt??
For days 6-10, you should have three protein shakes and two meals. 2/3 of those protein shakes can be substituted with 20 almonds, one greek yogurt, or two eggs.
Does anyone know how much broth should be consumed on Day 1? It doesn’t state and I couldn’t believe that I almost consumed 4 quarts of broth (Up at 3am) and went to bed at 8pm. I was so swollen.. ankles, calfs and in such discomfort.

I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks on pre-OP diet and 28 in the first 4 weeks post-OP but the minute I started eating solids I stopped losing and have now gained back 12 lbs. I can eat about 8oz but get sick if I eat one bite more and my acid reflux is terrible now. I hate to get sick or hurt everytime I eat, I hate the reflux but it would all be worth it if I were actually losing weight. The money I spent was a waste if I only gonna lose the 16 lbs. P.s. I started at 258 and 227 15 month post-op so there plenty to lose. Gonna try this reset.

I had the sleeve 10 years ago and I lost 14lbs when I did this diet in the Fall of 2021. I’m doing it again and have lost 7.2 lbs in the first two days. It not easy the first couple of days, but when I get past those days, it’s not so bad. It really shrinks your stomach and gives you a chance to start over controlling your portions and making better food choices.

I’m confused about the 2 servings of protein in addition to shakes. I was going to buy everything to start tomorrow but put the cottage chz and yogurt back because I thought I read it was either or but now I am thinking it is in addition to…?? or is it only either or for days 6-10?
On days 4 and 5, you can have Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. On days 6 through 10, you will substitute the Greek yogurt for a protein shake
In regards to the weight loss vegetable soup, what if vegetables make you sick?!? (I know, I’m weird!) Is there a substitute?!?
You can use vegetables that don’t make you sick instead of those we have listed. You can also add beans, tofu, or egg instead of vegetables to add protein to the soup.
