A current passport is recommended for you and all individuals in your party. You can use a U.S. passport book or a passport card to cross the land border into Mexico, such as at the Tijuana border. If you do not have a passport or your passport has expired, we recommend ordering an expedited passport application or renewal to receive your passport before your departure to Mexico.

You need a valid passport to enter Tijuana, Mexico, and re-enter the United States by land. A passport is the most reliable document to travel from the U.S. to Mexico and back.

While the alternatives to a conventional passport, such as REAL ID and a U.S. birth certificate, may work for crossing the border from Mexico to the U.S. for Americans, it is NOT  a valid option when you are going from the U.S. to Mexico.

The more documentation you have, the better off you will be; therefore, be prepared. Remember to check with your patient coordinator, as these regulations are subject to change.
