QUESTION 1 – What made you initially come to Mexico Bariatric Center?

Price and Quality Service

[Interviewer] First thank you for taking the time to let me do this over the phone interview with you.

[Laura] No problem

[Interviewer] And just to get going into this I just want to firstly let you have a chance to kind of tell us about yourself and what made you initially come to Mexico bariatric center

[Laura] Okay, so I am a forty-three-year-old mom of two grown boys and I have yo-yoed my entire life and did Medifast in 2011 and lost 72 pounds. Did amazing, and wound up being a spokesperson for them. But over the past two years gained back 95% of it and said: “You know what I’m done, I just can’t do this anymore.” And “It’s not good for my body, it’s stressful…I need to do something Different.” And I had two friends that went to Mexico and had the gastric sleeve surgery. And the place they went they went with was good, but they weren’t in Tijuana anymore. So I didn’t feel comfortable going where they were. I did my research and I found Mexico Bariatric Center and looked at the doctors. Did my research there also, and thought all the doctors sounded amazing! And I decided to go with you guys, ended up with Dr. Valenzuela and would go back a hundred times, I loved her.

QUESTION 2 – How was your experience with Dr. Louisiana Valenzuela?

Dr. Louisiana Valenzuela is Personable and Professional

[Interviewer] How was your experience with her? What would you say made you love her the most? Did she do things that you feel went above and beyond?

[Laura] She was extremely personable when she came in to meet with me before surgery. I told her my concerns about having scars on my stomach and she was actually going to try to do a three incision…or a four incision which she wasn’t able to do because I didn’t shrink my liver enough. But she did a meticulous job and I barely have any scars. And..you know…she just…I hardly had any pain afterward whatsoever. The only thing I had was the gas…and as soon as the drain was gone the gas was gone. And actually, my husband and I went back to San Diego after my three days there after my surgery and went sight seeing for three days. And aside from a couple naps here and there, it was great!

[Interviewer] How long was that after the procedure that you went sight seeing?

[Laura] Three days! Yeah so two days in the hospital, one day at the hotel, and then we went back to San Diego.

QUESTION 3 – What are some passions of yours that inspired you to take action?

More Confidence in Her Acting and Print Work

[Interviewer] And that brings me actually to another topic I’d be happy to ask you about. Like what are some passions you have in your life that you would say that are now more freely opened up to you since your procedure?

[Laura] Well, I am an actress and…not that I worried about being in front of the camera so much when I was heavy. But I didn’t feel really comfortable in my own skin. And also mobility…now I’m like, “Throw me in front of the camera, I will pretty much do, within reason,(laughter) anything you want me to do.

[Interviewer] Awesome. So you have a lot more confidence now in your performance. That’s awesome.

[Laura] Absolutely! Absolutely, and also I’m starting to do a lot more print work now.

[Interviewer] Awesome, so you’d say your quality of life has gone up.

[Laura] Absolutely! Absolutely, and you know the self-confidence is just amazing. And uh…just feeling so much better. And also within…three months…my three months checkup with my doctor here… because he agreed to do all my followup…everything came back normal. And I was pre-diabetic,  high cholesterol, and the blood work was…not amazing(laughter). But when I went to see him in January he said: “Get the hell out of here, you are perfect.”

QUESTION 4 – How is your diet since the gastric sleeve surgery?

Eating Smaller Portions and Reducing Unhealthy Snacks

[Interviewer] You were pre-diabetic, so you were at risk. And it cured you of that risk, that’s amazing. And I was also wondering real quickly as well….since the procedure did you change up your dietary habits?

[Laura] I changed my diet to the point of where I don’t deprive myself of what I want, but I also don’t go overboard obviously, because I can’t.

[Interviewer] So kind of a moderation.

[Laura] Yes, I take the moderation approach. Every once in awhile I’ll have a quarter of a sandwich because that’s really all I can eat. If I’m craving bread, I’ll do a quarter of a sandwich. But carbs are, you know… very very seldom, and I really try to just concentrate on the protein. But I do give myself ice cream every once in awhile because I’m an ice cream girl. (laughter)

[Interviewer]  What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream would you say?

[Laura] ……Mint chocolate chip (laughter)

[Interviewer] So you’re still treating yourself but you keep fair control…

[Laura] Oh absolutely. And my biggest thing is, if I’m craving I’ll throw protein in my mouth. You know…I’ll eat some meat or I’ll eat a protein bar. And we get full so quick that…that usually takes care of it. So…my craving is gone.

QUESTION 5 – Have you had any emotional or relationship changes?

Relationships Hold Strong

[Interviewer] And as far as….since the procedure too…has it helped out in your relationships with people that are close to you? Like your family, your husband…as far as involvement as far as how you guys get along?

[Laura] Not….not really, because I’m a very perky person and I just haven’t really changed that much.

[Interviewer] So you’re still you. It’s just (laughter)

[Laura] Exactly, I know some people really introvert when they’re heavy but I was very fortunate that when I hit 200 pounds again I said, “You know what, I can’t go any further, I need to change this. I’m still feeling okay in my own skin, but I’m not going to very soon.” You know, I mean…me and my husband…my husband likes it when I’m smaller and…um…he likes me to be smaller than him and that’s okay, I understand, I like being smaller than him too. So in that regard, yes, but he still loved me to death when I was heavier.

[Interviewer] As he should. That’s awesome (laughter) Real quickly, I was also wondering…did anything unexpected happen after your procedure that you weren’t prepared for. Were there any complications, or did it all go pretty smooth?

[Laura] No, I haven’t had any complications. The worst thing that happened to me is we went to Denny’s once and the eggs were too greasy or something and I threw up and we left. But that’s only happened once, so…. you know I can’t complain. (laughter)

QUESTION 6 – Did you have any unexpected issues during recover?

Fast, Comfortable, Supportive Recovery Process

[Interviewer] What would you say sets Mexico Bariatric Center apart, that you really found is what pulled you in and that you really feel made is a special experience for you?

[Laura] The personability, of everybody, like…the affordability was huge. It made it actually a lot nicer because we could turn it into a vacation also because it gave us a little extra that we could use. And, just…when I was there the care I got… the nurse was…phenomenal! She really went above and beyond. I told her my veins were very small and hard to find, and she took ten minutes and took her time. And she had to stick me once to get in my IV and that never happens. She was just fabulous. Fabulous! The treatment I got and…the drivers were amazing and I just, really really enjoyed myself. So, for having surgery it really was not a bad experience at all.

[Interviewer] So glad to hear that yeah, because that’s definitely what we strive for. That’s our goal with the company is to really give a good quality experience and just make it a really special thing.

Would you say that there were any initial concerns or anything… that we put you at ease over… that you had in your mind coming in?

[Laura] A little bit…you know. I think we all go there scared to death because…it’s a huge change in our life. But once I got to the hospital and started to talk to the nurses and the doctors…I felt more at ease. But I have to say walking through those doors I was like, “What the hell am I doing?” I can’t lie. (laughter). But then…after it was done I was like, “Why was I worried? This has been an amazing experience.”

QUESTION 7 – What concerns did you have going in for your surgery? Would you like to give any extra recognition?

Loves the Whole Team

[Interviewer] Is there anything else you’d like to add?

[Laura] Ummm…just..you everything’s been great and wonderful since I had the surgery and while I was there I’d recommend Dr. Valenzuela a hundred times to anybody who was looking to do this. And you guys, I…..I’ve been very happy. Very very happy with the whole experience.

[Laura] Definitely Lucy…and Dr. Vand Ron. Ron has been great and you know…using my picture for website just..is like wow! So cool! (laughter)  And it’s great for my career too. So I really appreciate everybody that I’ve talked to.  Artoro was awesome, Victor made me feel so at home when I first got there. It was just, you know all around it was great.
