Before and after pictures are a ritual involved in every transformation. What better way to show off weight loss results than with a photo displaying how far you’ve come and how much you’ve changed?

Duodenal Switch Surgery is a powerful procedure performed to cure morbid obesity less often than the gastric sleeve. It restricts the amount of food intake, changes gut hormone levels, and reroutes the food path for fewer calories as well as fat absorption. These two key factors, referred to as restriction and malabsorption, have serious implications on the body in the form of excessive weight loss.

Biliopancreatic Diversion w/ Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) and its variation single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass w/ sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S), produces extreme weight reduction often in a short period of time and it resolves type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Duodenal Switch Surgery (BPD/DS) in June 2020

3 months post-op from Duodenal Switch surgery.  Started pre-op diet on 5/14/2020 weighing 330.1 lbs.

The biggest Non-Scale Victory (NSV) is being able to work my long work schedule and be able to have enough energy to come home and do all the housework so the home environment has certainly improved.

The pic on the left is my heaviest weight, and the bottom right is today!

Duodenal Switch Surgery (BPD/DS) in September 2020

Before Surgery: Scheduled for my Duodenal Switch (with Dr. Christian Rodriguez Lopez), next week. I’ve done my research for YEARS about DS, and now that it’s real, anxiety is building…

After Surgery: Five months ago, I wouldn’t have known what an NSV was. Four months ago, I said “those NSV are silly” Three months ago, I felt life-changing. A month ago, I was waiting to enter ONE-derland (I made it!)

Every day I’m seeing changes now. I want to shout it from mountain tops – “If you’re scared, wanting change, feel like you’ve done your best but haven’t gotten the results you wanted. Jump in, feet first, and prepare for life to change as you use your WLS as ONE OF THE TOOLS to reach your goals.”

What a difference 5 months can make… seeing pictures of myself is really the only way I can see the difference- and it helps motivate me for sure! Still, a long way to go, but I’m so happy with the decision I made.

Duodenal Switch Surgery (BPD/DS) in November 2019

I celebrated my one-year anniversary!

I had DS surgery last year on 11/29/19.

I’m worried I’m getting too thin now, which is never a problem I thought I’d ever had!

But it’s changed my life for the better in SO many ways and I wanted to be able to share my joy and gratitude with others!

Thank you, Dr. Rodriguez and everyone at MBC!!

“I just have to say I owe my life to MBC. Anyone feeling nervous about using them has nothing to worry about. They saved my life and they will yours too if you use the tool they give you. When I “walked” into the hospital I was over 600 lbs. I have lost almost 300 lbs now! I still have a ways to go, but my life is completely different. I was as wide as that car and now I am out of the prison I have been in most of my life. I hope to have some serious skin removal later this year. Thank you, Karla Ochoa, Leili Kohan, Ron Shahram Elli, and all the wonderful drivers, doctors, nurses, and staff at MBC. Thank you for saving my life and continuing to save the lives of so many others…and yes those are the same pants in each photo just different colors!”

I am forever grateful for this journey and for our friendship! I know you are someone I can always count on! I know our journeys aren’t over yet, but damn it’s been a crazy ride! #ourjourney #weightloss #wls #wlscommunity #ourstory #friends #greatertogether

Duodenal Switch Patient Testimonials

“I had SADI-S with Dr. Rodriguez on Nov. 19th. Everything went well. I met him before the surgery. I actually couldn’t decide between DS and SADI-S and he recommended SADI-S but said he could make the final decision after assessing my guts.”

Julie P, SADi-S Duodenal Switch

“I just had my DS (Sadi-S) on Wednesday – so far so good, but only 3 days out. We’ll see how things progress.”

Cher A, SADi-S Duodenal Switch

“DS has higher loss/maintenance averages. I am 15 months out from SADI-S (modified DS) and I’ve lost 92% of my excess weight.”

Sarah A, Duodenal Switch

Take Away

Most patients receive sleeve gastrectomy as the first stage and revise to duodenal switch next. This is a good weight loss option for less disciplined patients. A good candidate for this procedure is willing to take protein and vitamins permanently.

If you have IBS or severe acid reflux, other surgery options may be better for you. Here are the pros and cons of DS to decide if this is a good choice for you.

Pros of the Duodenal Switch Procedure

  • It adds years to your life!
  • It improves your quality of life!
  • It resolves type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and hypertension.
  • You will have more energy and stamina.

Cons of the Duodenal Switch Procedure

  • You may throw up blood and feel sick for a day or two after surgery.
  • You get smelly gas and stool called “malodorous.” You can reduce the gas and smell by cutting down on your carb.
  • You need to take bariatric-specific vitamins and mineral supplements as you malabsorb a lot of food you eat, plus fat and protein.
