Also, if you have a success story or progress that you’d like to share, please comment below!
Weight Loss
Weight loss is significant and begins immediately following gastric sleeve surgery. The best results typically happen in patients who change their lifestyle habits through diet, exercise, and post-op diet. As long as you practice healthy eating habits, you are unlikely to stretch your stomach. Here is an average excess weight loss (EWL) for past patients at various stages of post-op sleeve gastrectomy surgery.
Percentage of Excess Weight Loss (%EWL)*:
- 3 months: 25-35%
- 6 months: 45-55%
- 1 year: 65-70%
- 18 months: 70-75%
- 3 years: 60-72%
- 10 years: 40-60%
Health and Quality of Life Benefits
- Expected weight loss of 65-70% within one year
- Improve, reduce, or cure health problems related to obesity
- Quality of life benefits
- Non-scale victories
- Boost in self-confidence and happiness
- Lifestyle changes
- Increase in sex drive and physical attraction
Your Skin After Rapid Weight Loss
Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is performed using a minimally-invasive technique, known as laparoscopic surgery. Scarring tends to be minimal as the surgeon uses 3 to 5 tiny incisions across the abdomen – unless you choose single-incision instead. But being overweight or obese for a long period of time can create less-elastic skin around areas like arms, thighs, legs, and stomach.
Loose, Sagging, and Excess Skin
Sagging skin may appear due to the rapid weight loss after gastric sleeve. Depending on the skin’s elasticity, excess skin may need to be removed with cosmetic surgery procedures. Excess skin varies from patient to patient, usually being influenced by age, size, amount of weight loss, and period of time being overweight.
*Remember, individual results may vary and these results may not be typical.

I had a tummy tuck years ago due to very thin skin and often bleeding due to how thin my skin was, this isn’t considered a weight loss surgery correct? I didn’t have it done to lose weight. I was thin already. I lost very little weight. I have since gained close to 100 lbs. I am us to being between 100-120lbs. Is this reasonable at my age and weight? I also use to be a drug addict but have been clean and sober for over 3 years now. I just want to be honest with my surgeon about my past.
Hi Bridget, Correct, a tummy tuck is not considered weight loss surgery! Please fill out a Heath questionnaire so the Doctor can understand your health history better. :)
Here is the link to our Heath Questionaire: https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/health-questionnaire/
Do I have to get approval from my Doctor before scheduling for surgery?. I see on the questionnaire that i filled, that there are labs to be done before the surgery. Do I do that on my own and then send the results, or do I have to do the labs with your center?. If so, how?. I live in the States.
Hi Becca, Labs are only necessary when our surgeons ask for them. You can get them on your own and send them to your coordinator. For more information, contact your coordinator.
I’ve been considering this procedure for quite sometime
But what causes me a little drawback is no one has mentioned what happens to all the loose skin afterwards.
Hi Sam, while it is common to have loose skin after weight loss surgery, there are ways to handle it. We talked to real patients and posted the solutions they shared with us on this blog: https://mexicobariatriccenter.com/how-to-lose-excess-skin/ If you have filled out a health questionnaire, you can also talk to past patients on our facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/insidemexicobariatriccenter/
